Giving Back is Better When it’s a Family Affair

Do you ever just think about all the ways that your life has made the world a better place? If you haven’t, I recommend that you do so. It’s not a moment based in ego but instead a reminder of the power you have to change the world and the reminder that you are already doing it.

I had the opportunity to go on a road trip with my mom over the holiday weekend. There’s a wonderful energy that road trips provide. They allow you to really live in the moment and connect with the person sharing the ride. It offers opportunities to sit and talk and reminisce. It opens doors to questions about life and living and in my case...Giving Back.

As we made our way from NY to MA we started reminiscing about all of the times that we shared together and it made me think of all of the ways that have served together. Some of my happiest moments are when I have the opportunity to Give Back with my mom.

One of my favorite memories is of us giving blood together at Cedar Sinai hospital in California. We both went in and happily gave our donation, the whole time talking and laughing and enjoying each other's company. I was never more content and the fact that our donations would go on to help someone was icing on the case.

My mother often says that she doesn’t know where I got this Giving Back gene from but I am quick to remind her that it’s embedded in my DNA. It’s in the moments when she takes food to the elderly. It’s in the moments when she sends money to those in need. It’s in the moments when she tells me that she’ll help me to reach one of my goals. I definitely come by this honestly and have to look no further than the very woman who gave birth to me.

If you haven’t already, take the time to Give Back with someone in your family. It’s a wonderful way to connect and remind each other of the good that always present. It will reconnect you if you need that and redefine the core of your relationship with one of service.

Family, no matter how you define it, makes our individual worlds better. Imagine how much better the world would be if we took our families and worked together to Give Back and help make the world a better place.
